The ARA Project


The ARA Project is a Costa Rican licensed zoological park and non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the two native macaw species of Costa Rica: the endangered Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) and the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao).

The ARA Project operates a breeding program and reintroduction projects in conjunction with MINAE (Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy). The ARA Project’s breeding center has the largest collection of Great Green Macaws in the world.

Are all your feathers washed and sterilized?
All of our feathers are washed and sterilized twice before handling.

Is each feather hand painted?
The Artists carefully hand paints each feather.

How long does it take to paint each feather?
Each feather takes approximately 1.5 hours to hand paint.

What kind of paint do you use?
We use acrylic base paints only

Can I send you a feather or feathers to paint on?
At this time we are not able to receive feathers from others to paint on,

Can you customize a feather painting?
At this time we are not able to provide this service but we hope to in the near future, we will put a notice on our facebook and twitter pages when we are going to be able to.

Can I purchase a painted feather without a frame or matting?
At this time we are not able to offer our customers to purchase feathers without a frame

What are the dimensions of the paintings on feather frames?
Each frame is approximately 14 ½ inches in length by 7 ¼ inches in width by 1 inch thick.
